Apparently, this game has been around for some time, but is actually only new to the American Market. By reading the reviews, it is easy to see that it is quickly becoming as popular here as it has been in Europe for well over a decade. While everyone claims that the game is super easy to pick up, becoming a master takes some time.

At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a simple board game, but it has many nuances that take some time to pick up. The game is also expandable and this is where it really starts to get tricky. Masters of the game have been playing forever and have likened the game to games like Stratego.

Like many board games, The Settlers of Catan will take a creative imagination to play. The game takes place on an island that must be developed. The new settlers have to develop their land according to the different environments that are created. Again, it seems simple enough, but there are enough twists and turns to make this truly addicting.

In this day and age of electronics and toys that can stand up and talk, dance or simulate a pet, it is almost refreshing to see something introduced that really does go back to basics in every way, including the theme of the game. For a true change of pace and a game that can literally bring the entire family together for one night a week, give The Settlers of Catan a try. Their faces may not light up when it is put under the Christmas Tree like it will for Wii Sports Resort, but you just may be amazed at what gets played with more after the newness wears off.
